In many cases a dividend is paid regularly by the company and is multiplied by the number of shares that you hold in your portfolio. If the dividend has something to do with the earnings it is a good sign. If it has nothing to do with it, the company might not care about its shareholders very much. Then you should be careful. If the company with large earnings pays no dividend, it also depends on future outlook. Normally a shareholder is seen as an owner of the company and deserves parts of its profit.
